DB Netz AG, Deutsche Bahn's rail infrastructure company, is Europe's largest rail infrastructure provider with a network of around 33,300 kilometres. With over 46,000 employees, the company is responsible for the maintenance, operational management, and construction management of Europe's largest rail network.

Challenge and motivation

Numerous locations in several German states are responsible for the expansion and maintenance of the rail network. In the past, the process for Human Resources Planning and Construction Planning, including data maintenance, compliance with working time rules, and release procedures, was partly manual and involved high expenses. Growing structures and the use of simple software solutions at the individual sites have promoted data silos and made this partly manual planning necessary.

Goal setting

In order to accelerate the process of disposing of construction measures, DB Netz AG pursued the following goals:

  • Manual processes and data silos should be replaced by software.
  • The development of the new software must contribute to a significant acceleration of the planning and implementation process, replace repetitive tasks with automation operations and control checks along the process, and lead to cost savings.
  • The planning and reporting process for dispatchers and managers should be transparent and understandable.

For the first time, the new planning software offers DB Netz AG's construction planners functions that support the entire planning process. Manual processes and data silos have been dissolved with the new web-based software. The application replaces manual tasks, offers automation processes, and supports the planning and scheduling of construction projects through integrated release processes. The construction crews can be flexibly arranged. Statutory working time regulations and individual contractual agreements, public holidays, special times, etc. are taken into account. The Intrexx platform and low-code development environment were used for the rapid implementation of the new scheduling software. Thanks to the integration capability of Intrexx, existing IT systems could be easily combined with the new scheduling software.

The application was implemented using the low-code platform Intrexx. Intrexx offers up to five times faster development of business applications than it is possible with conventional programming techniques. Citro is a certified Intrexx partner.
